TMS Treatment (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)
Treatment is a safe, non-invasive, effective treatment for depression.
What is TMS Treatment?
Each year, more than 16 million adults in the United States experience major depression. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive medical treatment for patients diagnosed with Major Depression Disorder (MDD) who have not benefited from initial antidepressant medication.
TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of the brain thought to control mood. TMS shows promise in other areas such as anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), auditory hallucinations, postpartum depression as well as with depression associated with Parkinson's Disease, MS, fibromyalgia and other neurological conditions.
Benefits of TMS Treatment
TMS has been proven safe and effective for treating patients with depression. It is free of side effects typically experienced with antidepressant medications such as weight gain or sexual dysfunction. Patients are awake and alert during treatment and are able to resume normal activities upon leaving the treatment session.
What to expect
Everyone's experience with TMS is different. Timing of when you feel improvement in your depression symptoms vary between patients. Some people will start to feel positive results within the first week and others may experience improvement over a longer period of time.
TMS treatment is a 20-minute procedure conducted in an outpatient office using a device that sends magnetic pulses - similar to what one might experience in an MRI (or magnetic resonance image) machine - to the left frontal side of the brain. During each session, a cushioned coil is precisely placed against the patient's head while magnetic pulses deliver the therapy to the correct location that regulates mood in the brain.
The procedure is done over a four- to six-week period, five days a week. Considerable improvement in symptoms such as sleep disturbance, concentration and energy can be seen in just two to three weeks. There can be some discomfort during initial treatment sessions on the side of the scalp where the treatment is administered, but it causes no other systemic side effects. Individuals can go back to work or about their daily activities immediately following treatment sessions.
TMS treatment is available at Eisenhower Behavioral Health under the supervision of TMS-certified psychiatrists. Click here for additional information about the NeuroStar® TMS Treatment.
